Personality:
Darcy is an adventurous college student who cracks wise and isn't nearly as science-minded as the people she surrounds herself with. Getting involved with a particle physics grad program didn't turn out exactly how she planned it – she really thought it was just going to be hauling equipment, reading charts, and possibly fetching coffee. Fortunately, Darcy isn't afraid of a little hard work, and she couldn't be happier that she wound up backing Jane Foster's studies.

Working with Jane isn't just about obtaining six credits for her major, either. Darcy and Jane have grown close. (I'd say their relationship is sisterly, but they're obviously bros. Bros who can drive each other nuts once in a while.) In some ways, they balance each other out. Where Jane is logical and methodical, Darcy can seem a bit vacuous and chaotic. It isn't that Darcy isn't able to appreciate Jane's order, it's just that it doesn't come as easily to her. Darcy's willingness to believe is what makes her an asset to Jane's work. But that might just be if you happen to ask Darcy.

It would be easy for feelings of inferiority to creep in when minds like Erik Selvig question her suitability for the work they're doing. Jane shrugs and points out that beggars can't be choosers, being as how Darcy was the only one to apply for the student worker position. Many people could see the fact that none of this seems to bother Darcy as stemming from some notion that she's simply too, well, simple to be offended. Darcy isn't bothered because she chooses not to be. She knows where her strengths lie, and they don't have to be the same as Jane's or Doctor Selvig's for her to maintain her sense of self-worth. It lends itself to flashes of brilliance, anyway. Darcy was the first to point out that it seemed Thor fell to earth as part of the atmospheric anomaly, and she was able to see how an archaic culture would see people of Asgard as gods. She feels by not taking herself and everything around her too seriously, she's not closed off to the possibility presented by the world around her.

For all her optimism, however, Darcy still has her proclivities for melancholy. When SHIELD commandeered Jane's work and equipment, – not to mention Darcy's iPod – Darcy was unable to see how Jane's team would get back on their feet, and back to their work. Life would go on, of course, because it has to, but she truly feared nothing would be as bright again. Fortunately, every time she's had moments of doubt like this, something has worked out to right the-universe-according-to-Darcy once again. Sometimes it takes a while – days, or years – but eventually she'll run out of reasons to indulge a defeatist mood.

While I've had Darcy in Teleios before, I don't intend to draw on that this go around beyond a strong sense that things are strangely familiar, which she'll chalk up to her sense of reality being jumbled from her time spent on the Tranquility. It also means she won't question when people recognize her, or talk like they should be friends. That situation is old hat by now, and Teleios is a vast improvement over her previous conditions. It's like a vacation! A vacation with indentured servitude.

Powers/Abilities: Darcy possesses no abilities beyond that of a normal human being in her canon. Her CRAU has added some, however, and will be elaborated upon there.

Appearance: The most important memo.

How has your character changed from their canon self?

When Darcy first arrived aboard the Tranquility over a year ago, she was able to maintain her usual carefree nature and stay true to herself. Over time, however, physical and psychological trauma eroded her ability to stay chipper in the face of insurmountable what-the-fuckery. Darcy is more given to bouts of prolonged melancholy and pessimism, though the change of scenery will go a long way toward seeing that beginning to mend.

Aboard the ship, Darcy at first avoided work, but once the gravity of her situation – and the situation of her fellow passengers/abductees – truly sank in, she knew she had to contribute in some way. She began by volunteering to help operate a communications hub for those who went deep into the ship to explore. This transitioned to her joining the Communications Department full time, when she was recruited by its then-leader, Nathan Petrelli (Heroes). When things went horribly awry for the commander of those exploration missions, resulting in two deaths, Darcy was thrown into deep despair, but one that ultimately spurred her to try harder to protect the people around her from the dangers present in their prison.

To this end, she allied herself with an entity known as Smiley, who had a habit of lobbing cryptic puzzles at the passengers and getting irate with them for being too slow to catch on. She accepted an "invitation" to venture into the unlit hallways for answers. While she was only gone for roughly three weeks according to the rest of the ship, Darcy wandered lost in the corridors for over a year, constantly at the edge of exhaustion, and suffering from severe hunger and thirst. This was done to break down her resistances and ensure her loyalty to Smiley, who led her back to the lit portions of the ship, thus "saving" her. It worked. Darcy became the entity's agent and quietly worked to further his agenda without alerting her friends.

It wasn't the first traumatic event she had gone through on the ship, and she came out of it relatively unharmed. (A previous ordeal had left her with a broken hand, another with mutations that would have eventually killed her if someone had not found a solution to revert everyone to their original state of being.) But it had spurred her to finally realize exactly how finite her time aboard the ship could be, and to not to skip opportunities to be happy just because they might not result in the desired outcome. The ultimate result of this was initiating a physical and ultimately romantic relationship with her current department head, L Lawliet (Death Note, found at [personal profile] ryuuzaki).

The end result from all her experiences is that Darcy has a strong fear of the dark, is plagued by frequent nightmares, and often gets lost in her own head. She doesn't like when things are too quiet for too long, and while she's always been that way, the reasons for this preference have changed.

Are they gaining any abilities from their time in game? Did the game setting take something from them?

Passengers who have spent a prolonged time on the Tranquility have had their physiology (or metaphysiology) altered in some way so as to allow psychic bonds between people. Generally, those who had no psychic ability before this manifestation require a very strong relationship between themselves and the person they want to commune with. For Darcy, this means L. Many have practiced to hone their abilities, but Darcy has only done enough to try and keep people out and to keep her thoughts from leaking out to those receptive to such psychic feedback. She could possibly establish communication with an established telepath of her own will, but it isn't the sort of thing she seeks out. Her abilities frighten her, and she likes to take an approach similar to plugging her ears and singing "la la la, I can't hear you!" This can still result in random manifestations of objects that lack permanence, but can be useful in the moment (a pen to jot notes, for example), but generally whatever she accidentally conjures will be innocuous and little more than an embarrassing annoyance to her.

Where she has virtually no control is when she is sleeping. Dreams can manifest in the real world without her knowledge, and they can be legitimate threats in the case of her nightmares, but they can be easily banished by waking her.

I am open to any limitations placed on this power set, or even its elimination entirely at mod discretion.

"It's not easy, you know. I spend all this time in school, working on my Poli Sci, but I need an internship, right? So I sign up for this thing. It looks like a total slacker gig – research assistant to an astrophysicist. I know, I know, that's not the kind of science I'm in, but it's New Mexico and it's six whole credits that I don't have to earn by copying lecture notes, right? How hard can it be to make coffee for one absentminded professor anyway? But she's the most ambitious person I've ever met in my life. She can't remember the little things, like when to eat or to pick up after herself, but she's brilliant. Nothing like me. But maybe that's why we work so well together.

You're a really good listener, you know that? You want a treat? Of course you want a treat!" Darcy dangles the biscuit in front of the golden lab pup in front of her until he stands up on his back legs to take it from her fingers. "Good boy!"

Prose Sample:
Someone is going to yell at Darcy for this. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she knows this. She knows it, and that's even if this person does turn out to be completely innocuous. And for all outward appearances, she is giving the benefit of the doubt that he is just that.

Until he makes that comment. He seems grateful, genuine for whatever help she might offer him, but she's a woman, and there's a distinction in what he just said. He's not looking for his girlfriend, or his wife. He's looking for the mother of his child. If this woman he's looking for isn't an ex, then it's something worse than that. "The archive is a beast," she offers as a pre-emptive caveat. "The technology isn't as stable as it could be, and it might take me a while to sort through the information. This might take more than one visit, I mean."

Her poker face is terrible, but Darcy is just so tired. She barely sleeps these days, and only eats when someone reminds her. It's a good unintentional smokescreen to the misgiving that she feels suddenly. She takes a seat at a terminal, setting her coffee down carefully, but still in easy reach. "Why don't we start with introductions? I'm Darcy." And he is...?

Trouble, obviously. Or maybe he isn't. Why can't she just decide? Why is it so difficult?
