History: Darcy Lewis is a political science major who, in the pursuit of easy college credits, applied to be a research assistant for astrophysicist Jane Foster. She wasn't terribly well suited, being that she isn't a student of hard sciences, but she secured the position by being the only applicant. Even though she was mostly there to slack, and she didn't understand hardly anything Dr. Foster was studying or trying to prove, she actually did her job. She hauled and maintained equipment, and ran the odd computer program to collect data, but also became something of a storm chaser. Which is how her life got a whole lot more exciting.

Dr. Foster was noting a pattern of some sort that Darcy couldn't comprehend, and tied it to some strange phenomenon of the weather that where equally incomprehensible. What she could understand was that Jane, and her associate Dr. Erik Selvig, needed to get close to this weather event in order to get readings. Readings of what? Didn't matter. Driving was something Darcy could handle, easily. She didn't sign on to drive into a freaking tornado or whatever it was just for six college credits, though. When she tried to turn back, Jane took the wheel, and suddenly – wham! – there was a man. He wasn't dead, much to Darcy's relief, but he was talking nonsense. He was rather large, too. Like well-muscled and tall and when he got agitated, he seemed threatening.

So, Darcy fired on him with her taser. As it happens, it's much harder to haul an unconscious man into a vehicle and transport him to the hospital, but if you ask her, that's really not her fault. The following day, as Dr. Foster and Dr. Selvig were looking for answers in the data and pictures Jane's equipment collected, Darcy noticed the shape of a man in the epicentre of the event. They retrieved the man from the hospital and treated him to breakfast, where Darcy was charmed. And also very impressed by just how well he cleaned up and how good he could look in a pair of Jane's ex-boyfriend's jeans. (Goddamn.)

His name was Thor, he said, of Asgard. And while he helped Jane find more answers, Dr. Selvig was more sceptical, fearing that the young scientist was being drawn in by a madman. It was Darcy that offered the reasoning that the Asgardians could have been seen as gods in Norse mythology, lending fact to science fiction and proving that she's more prone to rational thinking than she appears on the surface.

Dr. Foster's research would draw attention, however. From a secret government organisation known as SHIELD, who confiscated all her equipment – and Darcy's iPod, to her dismay – to other citizens of Asgard come variously to collect Thor and bring him home, or destroy him. When their sleepy New Mexico town was set upon by a hulking Destroyer, Darcy was front and centre to usher people to safety. She watched in horror as Thor was ready to sacrifice himself to save the people, and then in astonishment as he reclaimed the power he claimed to possess. He saved the day, and left to take the fight home, vowing to Jane – whom he had struck up a relationship with – that he would return.

He didn't. For months, Jane Foster searched for him, and Darcy stuck with her as she did. SHIELD returned their equipment and gave their support to Foster's cause. They came close to opening a wormhole similar to the one Thor came to Earth through, but failed, as if there had been nothing to connect to. When the call came through to take up a position in Norway after a year of effort still returned nothing, Darcy insisted that Jane take it. It meant they weren't in the United States when Thor's brother Loki led an alien invasion in New York City. And while Jane's methods were scientific in her search for Thor, Darcy used the internet. With a little hacking, she was able to find a live feed of what was happening in New York, images of Thor fighting off the would-be conquerors. But he didn't come for Jane, as he had promised. Jane had enough, and she gave up on her search.

New Mexico was left behind entirely and, reunited with Dr. Selvig, the three moved on to London. While Jane moped around, Darcy continued to work in her stead, though not as efficiently or as knowledgeably as Dr. Foster would have. She acquired her own intern to help her out, and stumbled upon some strange readings. Sensing an opportunity to pull Jane out of her depression, she brought her findings to her and waited for curiosity to draw her out.

What they found was the beginning signs of an alignment of realms, causing the rules of physics and matter to be turned upside down. When Jane discovered some great power beyond their understanding, Thor returned. He swept her off to his home, leaving Darcy and her intern, Ian, to figure out what was happening, with the help of an unstable Erik Selvig. In the final showdown, Darcy did her part to help thwart the invaders that would destroy not just life on Earth, but life in all the nine realms, though she believes her contributions were small, being as how she had no physical strength to lend to the battle.

The time following would be quiet, and while Darcy can't decide if she prefers it that way, it isn't like she has much choice in the matter. Things just happen, but her experiences have taught her that she has no intention of being a passive observer in her own story.

Personality: Darcy is an adventurous college student who cracks wise and isn't nearly as science-minded as the people she surrounds herself with. Getting involved with a particle physics grad program didn't turn out exactly how she planned it – she really thought it was just going to be hauling equipment, reading charts, and possibly fetching coffee. Fortunately, Darcy isn't afraid of a little hard work, and she couldn't be happier that she wound up backing Jane Foster's studies.

Working with Jane isn't just about obtaining six credits for her major, either. Darcy and Jane have grown close. (I'd say their relationship is sisterly, but they're obviously bros. Bros who can drive each other nuts once in a while.) In some ways, they balance each other out. Where Jane is logical and methodical, Darcy can seem a bit vacuous and chaotic. It isn't that Darcy isn't able to appreciate Jane's order, it's just that it doesn't come as easily to her. Darcy's willingness to believe is what makes her an asset to Jane's work. But that might just be if you happen to ask Darcy.

It would be easy for feelings of inferiority to creep in when minds like Erik Selvig question her suitability for the work they're doing. Jane shrugs and points out that beggars can't be choosers, being as how Darcy was the only one to apply for the student worker position. Many people could see the fact that none of this seems to bother Darcy as stemming from some notion that she's simply too, well, simple to be offended. Darcy isn't bothered because she chooses not to be. She knows where her strengths lie, and they don't have to be the same as Jane's or Doctor Selvig's for her to maintain her sense of self-worth. It lends itself to flashes of brilliance, anyway. Darcy was the first to point out that it seemed Thor fell to earth as part of the atmospheric anomaly, and she was able to see how an archaic culture would see people of Asgard as gods. She feels by not taking herself and everything around her too seriously, she's not closed off to the possibility presented by the world around her.

For all her optimism, however, Darcy still has her proclivities for melancholy. When SHIELD commandeered Jane's work and equipment, – not to mention Darcy's iPod – Darcy was unable to see how Jane's team would get back on their feet, and back to their work. Life would go on, of course, because it has to, but she truly feared nothing would be as bright again. Fortunately, every time she's had moments of doubt like this, something has worked out to right the-universe-according-to-Darcy once again. Sometimes it takes a while – days, or years – but eventually she'll run out of reasons to indulge a defeatist mood.

Ataraxion is likely to cause a spark to Darcy's adventurous nature, while also giving her something of a bleak outlook. Being relocated from one's home realm is prone to do that to a person. But she won't be alone by far, and will seek productive outlets for her frustration. There's always hope, of course. If vikings from space can find their way from their home to Earth, then there's got to be some way back for her as well.

Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations: Darcy is a baseline human with no extraordinary powers or abilities to speak of, though she has been known to hack into a computer system now and then. If she has any weakness, it's that she's not terribly scientifically inclined, and can be prone to distraction.

Inventory: A pair of glasses, tights, boots, a wool dress, coat, knit hat and scarf, and an iPod.

Appearance: Darcy Lewis is a white woman in her mid-twenties, with pale skin, full lips, and grey-blue eyes. 5'5" tall and curvy, she tends to dress in neutrals, with splashes of colour like burgundy or navy for accents. She favours chunky sweaters, and dresses or skirts instead of jeans. Her dark hair is slightly curly, but quite often tames it straight, styled with a large barrel curling iron. She often wears a pair of dark rectangular glasses, but not all the time.

Darcy is PB'd by Kat Dennings.

Age: Mid-twenties.

Log Sample:

The rooftops aren't just Jane's haunt. From up here, Darcy can see where her friend and mentor adjusts her equipment and watches the skies. Darcy lifts her head and stares up, too. It's been some time since they've seen activity, but none of them give up on hope – Foster's crew or their benefactors at S.H.I.E.L.D.

But the gods have chosen not to walk among them, it seems. Darcy's lips purse as she turns her attention back to Jane, watching the way she tries to pretend she isn't disappointed by instead doubling her diligence. Or is it vigilance? Darcy's never quite sure which of those words mean what she aims to ascribe to Jane's smokescreen. Either way, it isn't sad, precisely, but Darcy can't help but feel bad for the way they seem to be left behind.

There's a storm brewing on the horizon, and Darcy smiles small at first, widening when the first clap of thunder seems to roll through the clouds and over their heads. The air is electric, and that's always a good sign. Swinging her legs over her perch, she finds the solid ground of the rooftop and scurries down the fire escape. She's already fished her keys from her pocket as she's jogging past Jane to the front of their vehicle. "Got the satellite codes on my iPhone. I'll drive!" Time to chase the God of Thunder.

Comms Sample:

So, this is upsetting.

[The notion of being kidnapped to space probably should be, but oh no. That isn't what Darcy's talking about here.]

Do you have any idea how many functions on my iPod require a Wi-Fi connection? Like more than half of them! I mean, I guess I can play solitaire or something, but even that bugs me to connect to the internet to submit my high score.

Space is bullshit.
